Can BPH treatment cause infertility and impotence, and how can I avoid these issues if I am planning for a family?

Doctor's Answers 1

Common first line medications that are used to treat BPH can potentially affect the erections as well as the ability to ejaculate and hence can deter successful conception.

For men with mild BPH and concerned about the above-mentioned possible side effects, there are different medications that can be given to improve the flow of the urine as well as the strength of the penile erection. This is one option that I would advise for.

For all the medications mentioned above, they are all prescription drugs and should only be obtained from a medical practitioner.

For a man to be put on medications for BPH, his symptoms must be adequately bothersome. Sperm can be retrieved by other techniques if ejaculation is the issue. Consult a urologist to discuss this further and explore different options to improve your chances of conception without having to live with bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms.

Is IVF or IUI the best treatment for infertility?

Thanks for the D2D. Both methods can be effective, but a lot depends on your medical condition and the causes of your subfertility in the first place. IUI is relatively simple, less invasive, less costly and less time-consuming, but the success rates are lower. Certain existing conditions make IUI less favourable, for example if your husband’s sperm count and quality are low, or if you have 1 or both fallopian tubes blocked. IVF gives you the best chance of getting pregnant, but it demands more of your time and effort, is more invasive and costly, and most ladies find it more stressful.

Does douching lead to infection and infertility?

Hi, Douching can disrupt the pH and balance of bacteria in the vagina. This leads to a change in the composition of the bacteria that is usually found within the vagina. This in turn, could increase the risk of vaginal infections such as yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis. Besides that, it can also cause the spread of harmful bacteria, already present in the vagina, further up into the uterus. In reference to its impact on fertility, there are some studies that have shown that women who douche regularly take a longer time to become pregnant than women who do not douche.
