Can asymmetry after double suture technique (DST) double eyelid surgery be corrected?

Doctor's Answers 1

Thank you for your question.

It is possible to correct asymmetries after a suture blepharoplasty procedure, however, not all problems can be addressed by repeating the same technique.

The suture technique aims to create a fold but it does not address any excess skin and may not address ptosis of the eyelid.

If you are considering revision, it's best to wait about 6 months after your first procedure to see if the asymmetry is due to swelling. Also, it's best to return to your original plastic surgeon as they will know what was done in the first procedure and what the possible remedies are. If your procedure was not done by a plastic surgeon then I would suggest seeking the opinion of a plastic surgeon as they will be able to offer surgical solutions in addition to the minimally invasive solutions. You may require incisional methods to correct the asymmetry - fold height, excess skin and ptosis can be addressed.

It is common to have asymmetries early on in your recovery, so be patient, hopefully your problems will resolve with time.

Hope this helps.

How long do I have to wait between double eyelid surgery and LASIK?

This is a very good and interesting question. Some patients have asked me if 1 month is enough? Here’s my answer: Both LASIK surgery and double eyelid surgery can cause temporary dry eyes and tear deficiencies. Doing one before the other has fully recovered runs an increased risk of dry eyes and would not be advised, as one would need normal tear production to heal from the LASIK surgery. In addition, your eyelid closure may also be affected after the double eyelid procedure due to the swelling and this further aggravates the problem of dry eyes.

Can double eyelid surgery be repeated?

Double eyelid surgery can be broadly divided into 2 categories - incisional (cutting double eyelid surgery) and non-incisional (commonly known as stitching double eyelid surgery). The type that you had performed on you impacts on the repeat double eyelid surgery. The short answer is yes, double eyelid surgery can be repeated. The more important aspects would be the reason for repeating other than the loss of the double eyelid crease (skin laxity, eyelid drooping etc), the state of your eyelids/eyelid skin at this point and what your requirements are.
