Can anxiety disorder be diagnosed in a Singapore polyclinic?

Doctor's Answers 1

Thank you for asking such an interesting question. The common types of anxiety disorder that are seen in Singapore include generalised anxiety disorder, phobic disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and others. The older version of the US classification system includes obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) under anxiety disorders.

Yes, the doctors at the polyclinic are trained in psychiatry as all of them would have received teaching in psychiatry when they were medical students. Many of them also have a special interest in psychiatry and counselling and would have undergone further training in the related topics after obtaining their medical degrees. Many people with anxiety disorders also seek help from private psychiatrists and counsellors as the waiting time at these services would be much shorter.

Does early detection and prevention have any effects on reversing severe autism spectrum disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder, from our limited understanding, is actually a 'developmental problem'. Which means that we believe that patients are actually born with it, but it is only later in life that we diagnose it. We tend to find that infants who are autistic start to exhibit different behaviour compared to their peers since birth. What early detection does, is that the family and the child is more ready to prepare for the future. Also there are autism programs that help the child learn how to cope with his/her issues early.

Can insomnia be permanently cured, or is it a persistent disorder?

What is insomnia? Insomnia is characterised by difficulties initiating, sustaining, or obtaining qualitatively satisfying sleep despite adequate sleep opportunities and circumstances, resulting in impaired daytime functioning. Intermittent or acute insomnia is of short duration and often linked to specific events - for instance, not being able to fall asleep the night before an exam or an important job interview.
