Should I see my orthodontist straight away if my braces are preventing me from biting normally?

Doctor's Answers 1

There can be situations where your orthodontist will purposely prevent your teeth from biting together. This may be done with the help of bite turbos or bite buttons.

This is usually done at the beginning of treatment, usually if there is a deep overbite that would break brackets off the teeth or if there is significant tooth wear of the front teeth.

As treatment progresses, your bite will be monitored and the final finishing stages of treatment are for detailing the bite. The bite turbos will be removed at this stage. You should have bilateral even bite pressure on all your back teeth at the end of treatment.

What early treatments are recommended for a child with underbite?

Underbites can be caused by misaligned teeth (dental crossbite) or disproportional development of the facial skeleton (skeletal underbite). Dental crossbites can lead to the development of a skeletal crossbite if not corrected early in a child's life. In a growing child, the main objective of treatment is to prevent a permanent skeletal underbite from developing. This is usually done with a combination of: 1) A fixed palatal expander ^ Expander on day of fitting. The central screw needs to be turned in the direction of the arrow to start expansion. ^ Expander after 2 months.

Is getting jaw surgery worth it for an underbite?

Thanks for the question. An underbite (mandibular prognathism) is a type of dental misalignment (malocclusion) in which one’s lower jaw protrudes or extends further than the upper jaw.
