What are the causes of a persistent blood clot on my lip that doesn't disappear?

Doctor's Answers 1

It is difficult to ascertain what the persistent blood clot on the lip may be due to without a photo. However, conditions such as:

  • Angiomas
  • Haemangioma
  • Port wine stains

Can all contribute to a red area that is persistent and have little symptoms. In more serious cases, even skin cancers can present as a pink or red spot that is persistent and grows over time.

It is best to seek medical advice early if you have a new, persistent, or changing skin lesion. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the question. There are various conditions that can cause a dark discolouration of the nail. A blood clot or haematoma under the nail can cause a dark discolouration of the nail. This usually appears suddenly and is due to trauma to the nails. On closer inspection, the colour may be black or dark purple. This usually improves as the nail plate grows. A subungual melanoma or melanoma under the nail plate can also present as pigmentation beneath the nail plate. Melanoma is one of the most serious forms of skin cancer and it is important to diagnose this early.

How is colon surgery performed?

A colon surgery can be done either through an open incision or in trained hands, via the laparoscopic approach. Depending on the indication of the surgery, the 'radicality' of the procedure will vary. It is best to consult a specialist to discuss the details of the surgery. *Dr Stephen Chang*Medical Director, GLAD ClinicAdj Assoc Professor, NUSFounding President, Hepatopancreatobiliary Association (Singapore)www.
