What is Rhinoplasty?

One of the most commonly performed aesthetic surgeries is rhinoplasty [1]. It is a customised surgery with many different ways to get the nose you want. It changes the bone, cartilage, skin or all three.

Rhinoplasty can be done through a cut inside your nose. The cut can be made from outside, around the base. The doctor will adjust the bone or cartilage beneath your skin to alter to your preferred outcome.

Everyone has a different perception of what is ideal and perfect. Thus, it is best to ask yourself these few questions before deciding to go for a rhinoplasty:

1. Is rhinoplasty suitable for you?

Firstly, the surgeon will take a look at your medical condition and history. Those with a bleeding disorder are not encouraged to go through this surgery.

If you have had a history of nasal obstruction or surgeries, be sure to inform your surgeon.

2. What outcome do you intend to achieve through rhinoplasty?

There are a few reasons why people seek to alter their noses:

  • Aesthetic: Nose straightening, narrowing nostrils, change of size and angle
  • Medical: Improve breathing, correct disfigurement caused by trauma or birth defect

It could even be both, killing two birds with one stone!

3. Who is the best rhinoplasty surgeon?

Before you decide on a surgeon, there are some factors you should consider first:

  • Past experiences
  • Comfort
  • Trustworthiness
  • Aesthetic goals
  • Price

It is alright to poke your nose into the doctor’s experiences. A consultation with the surgeon is a good time to get to know about him/her. A doctor with a good track record of rhinoplasty can naturally make you feel more secure and comfortable.

During the first few consultations, you should bring up your goals and desired outcome with your rhinoplasty surgeon. This way, the doctor will be able to advise you if a silicone implant or autologous is more suitable.

Photographs of the different angles of your nose will be taken and manipulated to your desired goals. This will give you an idea of what your nose will look like after the surgery.

With that said, patients should be aware that the costs of cosmetic surgery are often not covered by insurance. However, if you have medical issues, the billing is split so that only the medical problems are claimed.

More costly surgeries do not mean that it is better than a cheaper one. Fees usually consist of several components that make up a clinic’s rhinoplasty practice. Factors such as experience and expectations matching are much more important.

You should never leave a consultation with unanswered questions. Remember to choose someone you can trust as, after all, your nose is in his hands, literally.

4. Pre-surgery diet and medication

Two weeks before and after the surgery, patients should not take any herbal remedies and over-the-counter supplements.

Medications that contain aspirin or ibuprofen such as Advil and Motrin IB should be avoided as it may increase bleeding [2]. Patients should always consult their surgeon before taking any medication or remedies.

5. Smoking

Smokers should stop smoking prior to and after the surgery as slower healing has been observed clinically. Nicotine reduces the nutritional blood flow to the skin, thus slowing the healing process. Therefore, smokers should avoid smoking before and after surgery [3].

In short

Getting a rhinoplasty should be something that YOU really WANT. The final results take some time and there are multiple factors you should consider. At times, there is really no going back once you get the surgery.

Research and discuss with your doctor the recovery period, the risks involved, and also your expectations. If you have any questions, you can submit them here.
