What are the side effects to having LASIK done?

A few possible side effects of LASIK includes flap-related complications, which includes a wide gamut of complications such as flap dislodgement, flap wrinkles, Sands of Sahara, flap infection, etc. During the flap cutting step of LASIK, multiple nerve endings will be severed and this may result in chronic dry eyes. Other complications which are common to LASIK and other laser vision correction procedures are under/over-correction, eye infection, corneal haze, etc.

Will cylindrical power subside after a spike due to epilasik surgery?

It is quite common to experience fluctuations during the initial recovery stage of your epiLASIK surgery. During this period, we will advise you to trust in the healing process. It is important for you to apply eye drops which have been prescribed and to stay away from strong sunlight. Your eye powers will take some time to settle down, but since it's been 10 days since your surgery, it's definitely still in the early days of recovery. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Are there any severe complications that require medical attention after getting my eye nevus removed?

We assume that you are referring to conjunctival nevus. The procedure in which the eye nevus is removed is quite straightforward in most cases. It involves a local excision involving eye drop anaesthesia. If the nevus is large, the eye surgeon may opt to do conjunctiva patch graft harvested from the under the eyelid or the other eye. The eye surgeon may elect to apply anti-scarring (Mitomycin C) agent to prevent post-op conjunctiva scarring. It is important to avoid exposure to sunlight for the first two months.

When should I worry about a broken blood vessel in my eye? (photo)

A broken blood vessel in the eye, otherwise known as subconjunctival hemorrhage, is caused by a rupture of the conjunctiva vessels at the surface of the eye. It can be caused by trauma or can occur spontaneously. Although it looks alarming, it almost always benign and the blood will absorb spontaneously within two weeks. More often than not, it comes without any symptoms.

How effective is IPL in treating Meibomian gland dysfunction and chronic blepharitis?

IPL is an effective adjunct treatment in most cases. It should be performed by a qualified eye doctor following a thorough and detailed eye exam on your eyes and eyelids. In most cases, repeated treatments may be required before there are any noticeable improvements. For optimal results, IPL has to be coupled with other types of treatments in the treatment of Meibomian gland dysfunction and chronic blepharitis. Depending on the severity of your condition, your eye doctor may recommend the use of: oil-based lubricating eye drops steroids antibiotics cyclosporine eye drops, etc.

Can Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL) still be performed a few months after LASIK, and are there benefits in doing so?

While it is possible to undergo CXL a few months after your LASIK procedure, the process will definitely be more troublesome as it will take longer. When not incorporated in your LASIK procedure, CXL will also cost much more. Since there are no significant added benefits of a delayed CXL treatment, it will be best to incorporate it immediately after your LASIK procedure.

How does an optometrist determine that the degree of the patient is stable for LASIK if it is the first time that the optometrist has seen him?

To find out if the degree has been stable, the optometrist would obtain the history of the eye degree from the patient. If the patient's prescription has remained similar over at least 12 months, the vision is considered to be stable. However, minor fluctuations of 0. 25 to 0. 50 diopters would usually be accepted, as these may be contributed by eye fatigue or errors during subjective refraction.

What activities can I pursue while recovering from LASIK?

It is important to allow your eyes sufficient time to heal while recovering from a LASIK surgery. If you engage in light sports, you may resume them after about 5 days. For more active sports (such as swimming, diving, bungee jumping, football, etc), you may resume them after about 1 month. If you regularly engage in rugged and contact sports (such as boxing, wrestling, rugby, etc), it is not very advisable to engage them after a LASIK surgery due to the cut flap created during the procedure.

If I go for LASIK enhancement 1 year later, will the corneal flap adherence weaken as it has to be opened again?

There are two ways to enhance after a LASIK procedure. My personal preference if enhancement needs to be done within six months, is to lift up the flap and enhance beneath the flap. However if the LASIK enhancement is done after one year, then my preference is to do the enhancement from the surface as a LASEK procedure rather than to lift up and weaken the flap adherence.

What are the main advantages of iLASIK over other procedures, and can I still play contact sports after the operation?

iLASIK falls into the category of LASIK surgery which is performed using the IntraLase iFS Advanced Femtosecond Laser to cut a corneal flap and Star S4 IR Excimer Laser to reshape the cornea, thus correcting refractive errors. Patients with had undergone iLASIK (or LASIK surgeries in general) should only participate in rugged or contact sports with caution. This is because there is still a risk of possible corneal flap complications especially when you engage in sporting activities, such as flap-dislodgement, flap wrinkles, etc.

Can diabetics undergo vision correction surgery?

Hi, It will depend on the patient's condition. Patients with diabetes may have fluctuating vision due to their inconsistent blood sugar level. However, if the patient's diabetes condition is under control, then it may be possible for one to undergo vision correction surgery. It will be wise for you to consult your endocrinologist/health professional regarding your condition.

How can I get rid of a recurring stye?

Hi, Styes result from oil glands of the eyelids. Unfortunately, there are no proven methods on how to prevent recurring styes. For some people, the recurrence may be associated with certain high sugar diet/ high fat content food. Therefore, by making some changes to their diets, some patients may find that their condition can be improved. Also, keeping your eyelid hygiene is important; I would recommend patients to use eyelid wipes which are available over-the-counter. Ceasing contact lens wear could also help in some cases.

Can herpes occur in the eyes, and what are the symptoms like?

Hi,Yes, herpes can affect the eyelids, conjunctiva and even the cornea. If it occurs in the eyelid, there will be blisters along the eyelid margins. If it occurs in the conjunctiva & cornea, there will be redness, tearing, discharge and blurry vision. For accurate diagnosis & treatment, I would advise patients to seek the consult of an eye doctor. He/she will be able to prescribe antiviral medications (either in the form of topical ointments or oral antiviral medications). I hope that this was helpful to you!

Can a LASIK flap be displaced years after the operation?

Yes, it is possible for a Lasik flap to be dislodged or displaced even 10, 15 years after a Lasik op. This is because a cut Lasik flap is not stitched or glued back - the corneal flap only adheres by tissue pressure. Thus, you can say that a Lasik flap never fully heals. If you have a Lasik flap dislodgement problem, you will immediately experience blurry vision, irritation and/or sharp pain. If that is the case for you, it is best to see a Lasik eye doctor as soon as possible to reposition your Lasik flap and also to prevent flap wrinkles and other flap-related problems from occurring.
