Why are our eyes red after reading from the computer screen?

You must be suffering from digital eye strain. Red eyes means that they are either dry, inflamed or infected. Make sure to blink more often and be sure to get your eyes checked as well. As many people are only blinking halfway, I suspect that’s the most likely reason why your eyes are red – they are dry because you are not blinking completely.

Does eating vitamin supplements help in treating myopia?

I don’t know if there are very strong evidences for treating myopia with vitamin supplements but it is generally very good for your health as long as there isn’t an overdose. Ultimately, it still boils down to proper myopia management such as outdoor activities and balanced diet, but there is no need to binge on vitamin supplements to prevent myopia.

Why do Intraocular lenses fail a few years after cataract surgery and implants?

Intraocular lenses (IOL) rarely fails a few years after cataract surgery and implants. However, a significant proportion of post-cataract surgery patients may encounter a condition called "posterior capsular opacification (PCO)" which causes cloudiness of vision. How does Posterior Capsular Opacification occur? During cataract extraction surgeries, the "nucleus and cortex" i. e. the core content of the cataract are removed through the front leaflet of the transparent capsule, on which a circular opening of about 5mm had been made (either with forceps or with e. g. a laser).

Is it wise to go for eyesight correction with LASIK or Smile RELEX at the age of 37 if presbyopia is likely to happen at 40?

Who is eligible for LASIK and Lenticule Treatments? LASIK or lenticule treatments like SMILE and the upcoming CLEAR by Ziemer are refractive laser surgeries that can be done from 18 to 60 years old, including people with presbyopia. The aim is to reduce our dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Are LASIK and Lenticule Treatments Suitable for People Close to Presbyopic Age? For those who are close to presbyopic age, I usually offer a trial of monovision with trial frames (trial glasses in the clinic) and aim for a small residual myopia of about 100degree in the non-dominant eye.

Can LASIK be repeated for long sightedness years after correction for myopia?

The concern about presbyopia in the forties after Lasik in the twenties or thirties is totally relevant. The truth is Lasik can be repeated or “enhanced”, either to treat residual short-sight or overcorrection causing ling-sightedness, so long as the corneal measurements allow it. Repeat Lasik to improve near vision after previous Lasik for short sightedness can and has been done, and done well before. However, the potential candidate needs to understand what it involves.

When can water touch my eyes after epiLASIK?

I generally caution my epilasik patients to refrain from any water contact with the eyes for a week after the procedure, and that means no splashing of any tap water etc into the eyes when showering and watching face. Also no eye make up for at least two weeks. If it is necessary to wear eye makeup, go slow with a new set, preferably after 2 weeks. A previous air stewardess patient of mine took more than 3 weeks off work after her epilasik as she was required to wear thick eye make up at work. Also, no swimming / hot spring/ onsen / eye massage or eye mask for 4 weeks. Hope that helps!

Are there any long term side effects of using eye drops for dry eyes?

Sorry to hear that your post-Lasik dry eyes are taking a bit longer to lessen. Typically the single vial lubricating eyedrops should be quite safe to use long term, even at fairly frequent intervals. However, the bottled forms of lubricating eyedrops tend to contain more preservatives and hence are not meant to be used too frequently, such as exceeding 4-5 times a day.

Is Bladeless LASIK or EpiLASIK more suitable if I have a weak cornea that is at risk for corneal ectasia?

If you are assessed to be at risk of corneal ectasia, no matter how low, it definitely pays to be more vigilant about the type of procedure you undergo. The type of machine that made the assessment may read differently from another machine. However, once any one machine flags out a suspicion, a responsible LASIK surgeon should certainly discuss your options with you. In fact even scans that turn out to be normal is not a 100% guarantee for surgical outcome free of ectasia, which basically is warpage of the cornea.

What factors should I consider in deciding whether to undergo LASIK for low myopia?

Low myopia may cause enough blurring of vision to some people, and if there is desire to improve eyesight and reduce dependence on glasses, there is no reason to object to seeking laser eye correction, as long as you know your choices. I once treated a patient with myopia as low as 50 degrees in combination with the same amount of astigmatism. The patient's eyesight improved by one line and it was a happy ending for the patient. Some people suffer from "night myopia" when the degree seem to increase at night in dark places, due to the natural pupil dilation under such lighting conditions.

Can untreated cataracts cause long-term damage to the eye?

Indeed cataracts when they progress (which they almost certainly will) can potentially cause poor vision. Usually cataract-related blindness is reversible, i. e. once the cataract is removed, vision should be restored. However, cataracts may indirectly or directly contribute to other problems such as glaucoma, which can cause IRREVERSIBLE BLINDNESS. It is important to find out if there is a risk of glaucoma and if the lens / cataract is associated with the risk. In some cases, early cataract surgery is recommended to reduce the risk of narrow angle glaucoma.

Can cataract surgery fix Astigmatism?

During cataract surgery, it is indeed possible to correct astigmatism at the same time. The astigmatism correctable is the astigmatism that arises from the cornea, and this may be different from what you actually wear in your glasses or contacts. There are a few ways astigmatism can be corrected at the setting of a cataract surgery: 1) Sometimes, if the astigmatism power is low and astigmatism's direction is where the small incision for cataract surgery is, nothing else needs to be done. The usual cataract incision can already treat the low astigmatism.

When should a cataract surgery be avoided?

Cataract surgery has evolved in recent years into a highly successful eye surgery, capable of removing a hardened lens and even improving one's eyesight free of power like myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and even presbyopia. For that, it is really a type of refractive surgery, when a customized lens implant is chosen. When there is minimal cataract, one should weigh the pros and cons of the surgery before deciding for or against it. There may be benefit in a cataract surgery even when there is no cataract, such as when there is a threat of narrow angle glaucoma.

How much does ICL surgery cost in Singapore, and what affects the costs?

Typically, most clinics charge upwards of $10,000 for ICL surgery for two eyes. In general, the cost for ICL surgery depends on three main factors: The doctor performing the surgery Where the surgery is being performed The eye power being treated Facility fees may or may not be included in the surgical fees. Facility fees for surgery performed at a more established surgical setting (such as reputable, centrally located hospital operating theatre versus a standalone day surgery centre) is generally higher.

How can I find the best doctor for ICL surgery in Singapore?

My advice is to choose a doctor who is not just skilled in the procedure but someone who is also able to offer an opinion from all points of view. Not all eyes are suitable for ICL, neither are all eyes suitable for LASIK, SMILE, or transPRK. Ideally, your doctor should be equally skilled in all these procedures, or at the minimum, be knowledgeable about all the pros and cons of these procedures, so as to reduce any biasness towards any one procedure. Choose the most suitable and best procedure for your eyes and yourself based on facts.
