What are the chances of a dermoid ovarian cyst twisting and bursting?

An ovarian dermoid cyst is a fluid filled sac which arises at birth and has the ability to differentiate into several structures such as hair, teeth, fluid or skin glands (sweat glands). These growths tend to develop in a woman during their reproductive years. A dermoid cyst tends to be mobile (because they are not often associated with pelvic adhesions) so pain as a result of ovarian torsion is a common presentation. It can also leak or rupture if it were to fill up with fluid. Sometimes they can even become cancerous.

When should I be worried about an overly bloated stomach if I have a cyst in my ovaries?

Hi there, Ovarian cysts may be present without women being aware of them as they can often be asymptomatic. When an ovarian cyst enlarges though, women may then start complaining of abdominal distention and pain, so this is usually the time that women start to see a gynaecologist for an ultrasound scan. Surgical removal of the cyst is usually recommended when the pain is severe and frequent.

What is the likelihood of pregnancy when my period is late and there is ovulation pain (sharp pain on the left side of the ovaries)?

There is always a chance of pregnancy as long as the individual: has ovulated. had sexual intercourse without using any form of contraception during that time (your fertile period). What is the best way to test for pregnancy? The best way to determine if you are pregnant is to test your urine with a simple urine pregnancy test kit. If it is positive then it would be a good idea to see your gynecologist who can then determine your gestation and to exclude ectopic pregnancies and multiple pregnancies by performing a pelvic ultrasound scan.

Is it safe to continue on a Yasmin cycle after taking morning-after pills?

It is best to take your morning-after pills (emergency contraception) as prescribed and then to wait for your menses to arrive before you start taking oral Yasmin contraction. In this way, it avoids any unnecessary confusion as you know that the emergency contraception has worked as your menses has arrived. Taking Yasmin on day 1 of your menses will then give you immediate contraceptive protection and will regulate your upcoming menses.

How can I increase the chances of conceiving twins?

From an obstetric point of view, it is not advisable to aim for a twin pregnancy if you are trying to conceive naturally as twins are considered high-risk pregnancies and can potentially be associated with complications for both the mother and fetuses. Women with infertility issues who seek fertility treatments are at a higher risk of twin pregnancies should the treatments be successful though.

How does an ultrasound help in the diagnosis of PCOS?

A pelvic ultrasound scan is a very useful non-invasive tool in making the diagnosis of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) as it allows us to visualize the multiple small ovarian cysts (follicles) which are arranged circumferentially around the ovary like a "string of black pearls" as it is often described. Women who suffer from PCOS may also have an abnormal hormone profile and this is another way of making the diagnosis in addition to the PCOS symptoms that some women may complain of.

Should my birth control shot be taken 3 or 4 months after the previous shot?

The recommended interval between each contraception injection of depoprovera is every 12 weeks. In this way, the contraceptive effect (prevention of ovulation) of depoprovera is preserved. If your menses is delayed and your last depoprovera injection was more than 12 weeks ago, then it is advisable for you to see your gynaecologist to determine if you could be pregnant.

How can I know if I'm pregnant without having access to pregnancy kits?

If you have missed your period and suspect that you may be pregnant, you can see a gynaecologist who can then do a urine pregnancy test for you in his clinic. In addition, he can also perform a pelvic ultrasound scan to detect the presence of an intrauterine pregnancy (or two!) If the gestational sac (pregnancy sac) cannot be seen on ultrasound scan and you have been confirmed to be pregnant, a beta HCG (pregnancy hormone) blood test can be then taken to determine how far you are along in your pregnancy.
